I likewise identify other types of Byronic heroes in Jane Eyre. At the beginning, the paper discusses the Byronic heroes in the two novels Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights and their characteristic features as Byronic heroes. Special attention is paid to the metamorphoses of the Byronic hero in those novels as well as to the presence of supernatural and Gothic elements in them. This paper focuses on the interplay of romantic and Gothic elements in the two most famous novels of Charlotte and Emily Brontё: Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. The Albigenses represents Maturin’s dramatic and romantic personality, his eccentric religious and political standpoints, and his interpretation of historical events, and each of these elements helps to form an understanding of the literary, religious, and political realities that Maturin experienced. His last novel, The Albigenses, best reflects his perception of the world and thus gives insight into the Victorian zeitgeist. Like a novel about the Albigensian Crusade amongst a mass of Third Crusade portrayals, Maturin himself was something of an oddity, most notable for his tendency to copy popular genres, and for his letter correspondence with Sir Walter Scott. This Irish Anglican clergyman wrote a fifteen hundred page gothic-historical opus called The Albigenses (1824). In a survey of crusade literature, only one obscure writer concerned himself with the Albigensian Crusade: Charles Robert Maturin (1782-1824).

Subsequently, hundreds of stage plays based on the novels romanticized and dramatized the crusade further. Sir Walter Scott, for instance, popularized the Third Crusade in the nineteenth century most infamously with novels like Ivanhoe, and The Talisman. Few nineteenth-century writers showed much interest in the Albigensian Crusade, which was a thirteenth century purge of Christian heretics in southern France by order of Pope Innocent III much more popular were portrayals the Third Crusade of the Levant, which took place in the late-twelfth century.
